Compare and Contrast
(Health Issues)
There are many differences regarding the health issues faced in Ancient Mesopotamia and modern day.
One of the differences is that in Ancient Mesopotamia, all of the people in the civilisation were very healthy, food wise as they consumed a diet with high nutritional value such as pure prolific fruit, nuts and grains. It was very uncommon in the region to die from a nutrition related illness. Whereas nowadays there are less healthy individuals in the population as unhealthy fast foods and process foods have been frequently consumed, causing nutrition related illnesses and illnesses in general to be very common. In those days, basic foods were less attainable because of the constructive and deconstructive environment. Technology was also less advanced meaning farmers had a hardworking lifestyle just to produce the food in its natural form, never mind having time to process it to create better tastes. Nowadays technology has advanced and with a greater population more people have had the time to experiment with ways of processing food. Nowadays we are also economically stronger and better tasting food using preservatives colours etc. that are not healthy for the body as they are unnatural, are sold more often to gain income. However, the basic idea of growing food and crops through agricultural methods has carried over to modern society and the same methods are still used by us today and even though most food has been processed, techniques today are based around the origins in Mesopotamia.
Another main difference is that nowadays we have different beliefs of how one is diagnosed with illness. Whereas nowadays society does not believe that sickness is caused by the Gods displeasure with a person but instead have other believes of the cause of illness that are more realistic as we have scientific evidence to support. Thousands of years ago, people had no technology, proof or ways of knowing how basic occurrences came to be, if they were not obvious to the eye. They then came up with assumptions or guesses, for example believing that the gods had created the illness. Over time technology advanced and we were able to develop proof of these occurrences through scientific research, which has changed our overall assumptions of this concept. For example, we developed certain technologies such as x-rays, which have given us evidence and changed conclusions. Overall, their assumptions of how illness is caused, although not accurate, has made people of the modern day persistent to discover causes of illnesses so that health can be improved.
The health issues we have nowadays, although quite different to their origins, are all based around the same ideas. Without Ancient Mesopotamia's impact on society and it's ways, life as we know it would be quite different in the modern world.
