Compare and Contrast
(Communications and Writing)
There are many differences regarding the communication and writing techniques used in Ancient Mesopotamia and modern day.
The major difference is that nowadays, technology has advanced meaning that the media and writing tools used to record writing have evolved from the use of wet clay as a writing surface, to paper. This is because, thousands of years ago, clay was the only available commodity for people to write on. Clay was as a pure form and could be easily attained, not having to be modified in order to be written upon. Nowadays, the availability of writing materials have been further explored as more time has past and a greater variety of natural resources and their properties have been researched. Because of population increase over time resulting in a greater sedentary lifestyle, a higher number of people had more time to explore writing opportunities E.g. paper. However, the concept of a writing surface invented by Mesopotamians, had been carried over shaping modern society.
There were not many forms of communication in Ancient Mesopotamia, due to less advanced technologies. Nowadays there are are a wide range of writing forms available to us due to the invention of digital devices. These include, texting, emailing, social networks and many more. Whereas in Mesopotamia, the only writing form available at the time was inscribing into clay tablets to communicate information. This is because of how much greater our limits of technology are nowadays as a long time has past allowing for greater explorations of possibilities. Another difference is that thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia, if one wanted to duplicate a single piece of writing or information, they would have to redo it on another clay tablet. However, in the modern day we are able to duplicate large quantities of information using digital technology. This all due to the major technology advancement that has taken place over time.
Another difference is that nowadays most people from any class have the opportunity to go to school and be educated on how to read and write, whereas in Ancient Mesopotamia only wealthy boys had this opportunity. In this modern age there are a much larger number of employment opportunities due to population increase, particularly ones that require the ability to read and write in order to become successful. In Ancient Mesopotamia, the majority of professions were based around agricultural practices, not requiring the use of writing and since it was an early invention, the possibilities of its uses were not properly considered. Only a few occupations in Mesopotamia such as a priest needed to be trained to become a scribe (professional writer). Over time because of lifestyle changes, the previous education system in Mesopotamia was altered, whereby writing became a greater part of our lifestyle that almost everyone needs in order to secure employment. However the first education system involving reading and writing being taught was primarily invented in Mesopotamia and this concept, although slightly modified, has been carried over and shaped our modern society, as nowadays education systems teaching writing and reading are still present.
Writing styles we have nowadays although quite different to their origins, are all based around the same ideas. Without Ancient Mesopotamia's impact on society and it's ways, life as we know it would be quite different in the modern world.
